Several years ago, Christen and I purchased a small, hill-side plot of land in the Goldstream Valley of Fairbanks, Alaska. Near the time we decided to begin clearing some trees, I thought it may be a good idea to get in touch with the owner of the neighboring lot, since it appeared that they were beginning to clear also. Several months ago, I emailed a guy asking him about a piece of equipment I saw in his shop online. A friend asked me to make him an ottoman for his chair. He wanted something similar to mine that he saw at the show, but a couple inches narrower. The neat thing is that he has all the materials required, including the quarter-sawn white oak (QSWO) and wants to finish it himself in order to color match

As promised, this post is the follow-up to the Home Show preparation discussed here previously. The weekend went very well. We had little idea of what to expect overall during the show, but we are very happy for many reasons. There was no better way to conduct the official opening of our venture.

I remember not too long ago experiencing some difficulty with a serious gap in our capabilities towards our goals here at Birch Hill Woodcrafts. We knew we had to be able to design custom wood concepts in furniture and such, but we weren’t prepared to do so in any reliable fashion. I am not a big fan, nor ever slightly… Read more

In this day and age, sharing information is simple and highly appreciated, esp. when desperately needed. The quality of information, especially in the woodworking community, is also improving in what must be nothing short of stunning to the masters of old. Long ago, what would seem to take decades to learn and perfect, is now a simple search engine query… Read more

They say a woodworker that can make a high quality box can make anything. The reason is – a “simple” box often requires a full range of woodworking skills. Even though boxes remain smaller woodcraft items, their lines and curves become central aspects of the piece and it’s easy to see the details quickly. That can both be good and… Read more
